🌿 Hemianthus callitrichoides (HC) ‘Cuba’
Hemianthus callitrichoides ‘Cuba’, commonly known as HC Cuba, is one of the most popular aquarium carpeting plants, valued for its tiny, rounded leaves and dense, bright-green growth. Under suitable conditions, it spreads across the substrate to create a compact natural-looking carpet.
🌱 Growth & Appearance
HC Cuba produces miniature rounded leaves along creeping stems that gradually spread horizontally across the substrate. When healthy and well established, the individual stems knit together to form a dense foreground carpet.
Its extremely small foliage makes it particularly attractive in detailed aquascapes and nano aquariums, where the scale of the plant helps create a sense of depth. With proper trimming, it can be maintained as a low and compact carpet.
💡 Lighting & CO₂
HC Cuba is a relatively demanding carpeting plant and performs best under medium to strong lighting with consistent CO₂ injection. Stable CO₂ availability is especially important for encouraging horizontal growth and preventing the plant from becoming loose or leggy.
Good water circulation and a balanced supply of nutrients will also help maintain healthy and compact growth.
🪴 Planting & Establishment
For easier establishment, divide HC Cuba into small portions and plant them separately with a little space between each portion. This allows the plant to spread naturally and helps prevent large clumps from lifting from the substrate.
A nutrient-rich substrate is recommended, while root fertilization can provide additional support during establishment. Keep the crown and growing stems close to the substrate without burying the foliage too deeply.
✂️ Maintenance
Once the carpet becomes established, occasional trimming can help maintain a compact appearance. If the carpet becomes excessively thick, trimming it back can improve light and water circulation through the lower layers.
🌿 Best Use
HC Cuba is ideal for foreground carpeting in nature-style aquascapes, Iwagumi layouts and detailed planted aquariums. Its tiny leaves create a soft, dense green carpet that looks particularly attractive around rocks, driftwood and other hardscape elements.
For aquascapers looking for a true miniature carpeting plant, HC Cuba offers one of the most refined foreground effects when grown under stable conditions.
