🌿 Ludwigia polycarpa
Ludwigia polycarpa, commonly known as Many-Fruited Ludwigia, is a rare and refined aquatic stem plant featuring narrow, lanceolate leaves arranged in tight, symmetrical whorls. Its neat leaf arrangement and subtle color shifts from lime green to warm bronze and pinkish-orange make it a sophisticated choice for planted aquariums.
🌱 Growth & Appearance
This species produces erect, sturdy stems lined with smooth, pointed leaves. Under good conditions, the top rosettes expand into a star-like form, with the upper leaves developing soft peach, copper, and orange tones.
It features a moderate, controlled growth rate, making it far easier to shape and manage than faster-growing stem plants. Regular trimming encourages multiple side shoots to emerge, forming a dense, elegant column of foliage.
💡 Lighting & CO₂
Ludwigia polycarpa achieves its best form and coloration under moderate to high lighting. Stronger light encourages compact node spacing and triggers warmer bronze and orange pigments at the crowns.
CO₂ injection is recommended to maintain clean leaf growth, robust stem development, and prevent tip stunting. It also responds well to regular water column dosing, particularly liquid iron and trace minerals.
🪴 Planting & Maintenance
Plant individual stems into a rich substrate, leaving adequate space between them so light can reach the lower leaves. To propagate, simply cut the top portion once stems reach your desired height and replant the healthy cuttings into the substrate.
Periodic pruning helps control height, encourages branching from the base, and prevents lower stems from becoming shaded out.
🌿 Best Use
Ludwigia polycarpa makes an excellent midground to background stem plant for nature aquascapes, Dutch-style layouts, and collector aquariums.
Its delicate, star-shaped tops and soft orange-green hues provide a subtle visual bridge between bright green species and intense dark red plants.
