Ammannia gracilis
Ammannia gracilis is a classic aquarium stem plant known for its attractive reddish to bronze coloration and upright growth. With sufficient light and a good supply of nutrients, it can develop rich red tones that provide excellent contrast against green plants in a planted aquarium.
It is a versatile stem plant that can be used to create dense background groups or colorful midground sections in larger aquariums. Regular trimming encourages branching and allows you to maintain a compact, bushier group.
Ammannia gracilis produces slender upright stems with relatively narrow leaves. Under stronger lighting and stable conditions, the foliage can transition from greenish tones to bronze, orange-red and reddish-purple shades.
Its upright growth habit makes it particularly useful for creating height and depth in a planted layout. Planting several stems together can produce a fuller and more striking group.
Light: Medium to High
Strong lighting is recommended for compact growth and stronger coloration.
Under lower light, growth may become more elongated and coloration can remain predominantly green.
CO₂ injection is strongly recommended for Ammannia gracilis, especially when aiming for faster growth, compact stems and intense coloration.
It can be maintained without injected CO₂ under suitable conditions, but growth and coloration may be more limited.
Ammannia gracilis is a relatively nutrient-demanding stem plant. Consistent availability of macronutrients and micronutrients, along with adequate iron, helps support healthy growth and coloration.
A nutrient-rich substrate can be beneficial, while regular water-column fertilization helps maintain consistent growth in established aquariums.
Regular trimming is the best way to create a dense group. Cut the upper portion of healthy stems and replant the cuttings into the substrate.
The remaining lower stems can produce new side shoots, while the replanted tops develop into new plants.
Avoid allowing stems to become excessively crowded, as sufficient light penetration and water circulation help maintain healthy lower growth.
Ammannia gracilis is generally best suited to the background or midground of medium to large aquariums. Its upright form and warm coloration work particularly well when planted as a group.
It can also be used as a focal-color plant among green stem plants, creating strong visual contrast without requiring unusually shaped foliage.
