🌿 Marsilea crenata
Marsilea crenata, commonly known as Asian Water Clover, is a highly versatile aquatic fern popular for creating low-growing foreground carpets. Valued for its resilience and adaptability, it features small leaves that morph between single-lobed blades and classic four-leaf clover shapes depending on aquarium conditions.
🌱 Growth & Appearance
This carpeting fern spreads via subterranean runners that send up delicate vertical leaf stems. Submerged growth typically produces smooth, single-lobed or double-lobed leaves that resemble Glossostigma, though emergent foliage often forms distinct four-lobed clovers.
It forms a dense, low-profile mat that stays close to the substrate. Growth is moderate and steady, making it far easier to control and trim than faster-growing carpeting species like Eleocharis or Hemianthus callitrichoides.
💡 Lighting & CO₂
Marsilea crenata is exceptionally adaptable and can be grown successfully in low, mid, and high-tech aquariums. Moderate to high lighting promotes the shortest, most compact carpet height and encourages single-lobed submerged foliage.
CO₂ injection is optional, making it one of the most reliable carpet plants for low-tech setups. However, providing CO₂ alongside balanced liquid nutrients significantly accelerates runner formation and carpet density.
🪴 Planting & Maintenance
Separate tissue culture pots or clumps into small portions containing several leaves and roots. Using fine tweezers, plant each portion deep into a rich aquasoil substrate, leaving small gaps between clumps for runners to fill in.
Maintenance is minimal compared to other foreground plants. Simply trim tall or floating runners near the base to maintain a uniform, low lawn over time.
🌿 Best Use
Marsilea crenata is an outstanding foreground carpeting plant for nature-style aquascapes, Iwagumi layouts, and low-tech setups.
Its deep green hue and organic leaf texture create a natural visual transition between hardscape bases, forecourt open space, and taller background stems.
