Rotala Green – Rotala sp. ‘Green’
🌿 Plant Overview
Rotala Green is a popular aquatic stem Plant valued for its fresh, bright-green foliage and dense, bushy growth. Unlike many Rotala varieties that develop reddish tones under intense lighting, this variety generally retains its vibrant green colour, making it an excellent choice for creating contrast against red and orange Plants in a planted aquarium.
With its slender stems and narrow leaves, Rotala Green creates a fine-textured background that adds depth and a natural appearance to aquascapes. It is relatively easy to grow, adapts to a wide range of aquarium conditions and responds well to regular trimming.
✨ Key Features
Bright Green Foliage: Maintains a fresh green appearance even under relatively strong lighting.

Beginner-Friendly: Adapts to a broad range of freshwater aquarium conditions.
Versatile Placement: Suitable for background planting and larger midground layouts.
Easy Propagation: Healthy stem cuttings can be replanted to expand an existing group.

💡 Lighting, CO₂ & Nutrition
Rotala Green grows well under medium lighting and can adapt to lower-light aquariums when nutrient availability is adequate. Stronger lighting combined with stable CO₂ and balanced fertilisation encourages more compact growth and fuller clusters.
A nutrient-rich substrate can support healthy development, although regular liquid fertilisation can also provide the nutrients required for growth. CO₂ injection is not essential, but it can improve growth rate and overall plant density.
✂️ Planting & Maintenance
Separate the stems and plant them individually or in small groups, leaving enough space for light and water circulation between them.
Trim the upper portions when the stems become too tall. Regular pruning encourages branching and helps maintain a dense, bushy appearance. Healthy cuttings can be replanted directly into the substrate to create a fuller background.
⚠️ Important Notes
Rotala Green may develop a looser growth habit under lower lighting. If the lower leaves begin to deteriorate, check whether the upper foliage is shading them. Emersed-grown Plants may also produce a different leaf shape before adapting to submerged growth.
