🌿 Rotala rotundifolia 'Orange Juice'
Rotala rotundifolia 'Orange Juice', commonly known as Rotala Orange Juice, is a colorful and popular stem plant selection derived from the classic Rotala rotundifolia. Celebrated for its bright, warm coloration, it develops a vibrant apricot-to-tangerine orange tone that persists even under moderate lighting conditions where other red species might fade to green.
🌱 Growth & Appearance
This species produces narrow, delicate lanceolate leaves along thin, upright stems. Unlike standard red or green varieties, Orange Juice is characterized by its distinct warm orange pigments, ranging from soft peach at lower stem sections to intense orange-red at the growing crowns.
It exhibits a fast growth rate and a branching, bushy growth habit. Under strong lighting, the stems naturally lean horizontal or arch downward, sprouting numerous side shoots that easily form dense, flowing bushes when regularly pruned.
💡 Lighting & CO₂
Rotala Orange Juice is relatively adaptable, maintaining a warm orange tone under moderate light, though high to very high lighting produces the tightest node spacing and most vivid tangerine-red pigments.
Pressurized CO₂ injection and a steady nutrient regime are required to bring out its richest coloration, prevent lower leaf drop, and maintain fast, healthy growth. Micronutrient dosing, particularly iron, enhances the depth of its orange pigments.
🪴 Planting & Maintenance
Plant groups of 3 to 5 stems into a nutrient-rich substrate using fine tweezers, leaving adequate space between stems to ensure lower leaves receive proper light and flow. To propagate, simply trim the top 4 to 6 inches of healthy stems once they reach your desired height and replant the tops into the soil.
Frequent pruning is essential to sculpt thick, rounded bushes. The plant handles heavy topping extremely well, sprouting multiple new side branches from each cut stem node.
🌿 Best Use
Rotala Orange Juice is an outstanding midground to background stem plant for nature aquascapes, Dutch-style street layouts, and colorful community aquariums.
Its warm orange foliage offers a unique visual bridge between classic bright green background plants and intense dark crimson species like Rotala macrandra or Ludwigia.
