🌿 Helanthium bolivianum ‘Quadricostatus’
Helanthium bolivianum ‘Quadricostatus’ is a hardy and versatile rosette plant that produces narrow, grass-like green leaves and gradually spreads across the substrate through runners. It is an excellent choice for aquascapers looking for a relatively easy foreground or midground plant that can create a natural, grassy appearance.
🌱 Growth & Appearance
This plant develops from a compact rosette, producing slender green leaves that grow upward before gently arching outward. Once established, it sends out runners that develop into new plantlets, allowing it to slowly form a group across the substrate.
Compared with very short carpeting plants such as HC Cuba, Helanthium bolivianum ‘Quadricostatus’ has a taller and more grass-like appearance, making it useful for creating transitions between a foreground carpet and taller background plants.
💡 Lighting & CO₂
Helanthium bolivianum ‘Quadricostatus’ is relatively undemanding and can grow successfully in low-tech aquariums without injected CO₂. Low to medium lighting is generally sufficient, although stronger lighting and CO₂ can encourage denser growth and faster spreading.
Consistent nutrition and stable aquarium conditions will help the plant develop a fuller appearance.
🪴 Planting & Substrate
Plant the roots directly into the substrate while keeping the crown above the substrate surface. A nutrient-rich substrate can support stronger root development, although the plant can adapt to a variety of aquarium substrates.
Once established, allow the runners to spread naturally. New plantlets can also be separated and replanted elsewhere when the group becomes too dense.
✂️ Maintenance
Maintenance is relatively simple. Remove older or damaged leaves when necessary and trim back excessive growth if the plant begins to occupy more space than intended.
Because it spreads through runners, it can gradually create a natural cluster without requiring frequent replanting.
🌿 Best Use
Helanthium bolivianum ‘Quadricostatus’ works particularly well as a foreground to midground plant in nature-style aquascapes, community aquariums and low-tech planted tanks.
Its grass-like appearance creates excellent texture and can be used around rocks and driftwood or as a transition between low carpets and taller aquatic plants.
