🌿 Hydrocotyle tripartita ‘Mini’
Hydrocotyle tripartita ‘Mini’ is a compact and attractive carpeting plant known for its small, clover-like leaves and creeping growth habit. It is a popular choice for aquascapers who want a fresh green foreground with a more natural and textured appearance than traditional carpeting plants.
🌱 Growth & Appearance
This plant spreads horizontally through creeping stems, producing small bright-green leaves that grow upward from the runners. Under suitable conditions, it can gradually form a dense, bushy carpet across the substrate.
Its miniature foliage gives the plant a delicate appearance, while its creeping growth allows it to wrap naturally around rocks and hardscape. Regular trimming can keep the growth compact and encourage the plant to spread horizontally.
💡 Lighting & CO₂
Hydrocotyle tripartita ‘Mini’ can adapt to a range of aquarium conditions, but moderate to strong lighting and CO₂ injection are recommended for dense, compact growth.
It can be grown without CO₂ in suitable low-tech setups, although growth may be slower and more upright. Good lighting, stable CO₂ and consistent nutrients will help achieve a tighter carpet.
🪴 Planting & Establishment
Plant small portions directly into the substrate, leaving some space between each portion. As the runners develop, they will spread across the surrounding substrate and produce new growth.
The plant can also attach itself around hardscape elements, making it particularly useful for creating a natural transition between rocks, wood and the substrate.
✂️ Maintenance
Regular trimming is recommended once the plant becomes established. Cutting back taller growth encourages branching and helps maintain a compact, low-growing appearance.
Because it spreads quickly under good conditions, occasional trimming may be necessary to prevent it from overtaking nearby plants.
🌿 Best Use
Hydrocotyle tripartita ‘Mini’ works beautifully as a foreground to midground plant in nature-style aquascapes, nano aquariums and planted community tanks. Its small clover-like leaves provide excellent texture and contrast against fine-leaved stem plants and traditional carpeting species.
It is especially attractive when allowed to grow naturally over and around hardscape, creating a soft and organic transition between the substrate and rocks or driftwood.
