Hygrophila difformis, commonly known as Water Wisteria, is a fast-growing and highly adaptable aquatic stem plant known for its distinctive, deeply lobed leaves. Its lush green foliage creates a soft, bushy appearance and makes it an excellent choice for filling space and adding volume to a planted aquarium.

🌱 Growth & Appearance

Underwater, Hygrophila difformis develops finely divided, lace-like leaves that give it a very different appearance from its emersed form. With adequate light and nutrients, it can grow rapidly and produce dense clusters of foliage.

Its fast growth makes it useful for quickly establishing greenery in a new aquarium. Regular trimming encourages branching and allows the plant to become fuller and more compact instead of growing as long, sparse stems.

Hygrophila difformis is an undemanding plant that can grow successfully in low-tech aquariums without injected CO₂. It can also adapt well to higher-tech setups, where stronger lighting, CO₂ and sufficient nutrients can encourage faster and denser growth.

Moderate lighting is generally suitable for maintaining healthy, compact growth.

🪴 Planting & Maintenance

Plant the individual stems into the substrate with some space between each stem to allow light to reach the lower portions of the plant. As it grows, trim the taller stems and replant the healthy cuttings to create a thicker group.

Because of its rapid growth, regular trimming is recommended to keep the plant in shape and prevent it from shading smaller plants underneath.

Hygrophila difformis works particularly well as a background or midground stem plant and is suitable for both beginner-friendly and more advanced planted aquariums. Its finely divided foliage creates excellent texture and contrast when combined with broad-leaved plants, Cryptocoryne, Anubias or other stem plants.
