🌿 Phyllanthus fluitans
Phyllanthus fluitans, commonly known as Red Root Floater, is a highly decorative floating plant native to South America. Famous for its round, hydrophobic leaves and crimson root system, it is one of the most popular floating species for adding warmth, natural shading, and nutrient export to planted aquariums.
🌱 Growth & Appearance
This species forms floating rosettes of small, heart-shaped leaves that naturally repel water. Under moderate light, the leaves maintain a pleasant olive-green to bronze color with deep red undersides. Under intense lighting, the entire leaf surface transforms into a brilliant brownish-red tone.
Its most striking feature is its dangling root structure, which turns vibrant ruby-red. Unlike duckweed, it grows in connected floating chains that are easy to manage and thin out.
💡 Lighting & CO₂
Phyllanthus fluitans performs best under moderate to high lighting. High light intensity triggers maximum leaf reddening and maintains compact leaf size.
CO₂ injection is unnecessary because floating leaves draw carbon directly from the atmosphere. However, it requires a low-flow surface environment. High surface agitation or splash onto the topsides of the leaves can cause rot.
🪴 Planting & Maintenance
Gently place portions onto the water surface in calm areas of the aquarium. Ensure light can penetrate through to submerged plants below by regularly scooping out excess growth to maintain proper surface coverage.
It is an excellent natural water purifier that rapidly absorbs excess nitrates and phosphates directly from the water column. Provide liquid iron and macro nutrients to keep the root system deep red and prevent leaf yellowing.
🌿 Best Use
Phyllanthus fluitans is a top-tier floating surface plant for nature aquascapes, shrimp tanks, low-tech setups, and blackwater biotopes.
Its hanging red roots create a stunning visual canopy overhead while providing secure shelter for dwarf shrimp, fry, and surface-dwelling species like Anabantoids.
