Vallisneria americana 'Jungle', commonly known as Jungle Val, is a classic aquatic background plant famous for its long, ribbon-like green leaves. Its tall, streaming foliage moves gracefully with the water flow, making it one of the most popular choices for creating dramatic underwater backdrops and natural jungle-style layouts.

🌱 Growth & Appearance

Jungle Val produces thick, blade-like leaves that can easily grow several feet long and up to an inch wide. Under suitable conditions, the foliage forms a dense wall of green at the back of the aquarium, with leaf tips flowing along the water surface to provide natural shade.

Its robust root system allows it to anchor firmly into the substrate. Once established, it spreads naturally by sending out runners, quickly filling in empty background spaces.

Jungle Val is extremely adaptable and thrives across a wide range of lighting conditions. Low to moderate light is sufficient for healthy growth, though higher light will produce broader blades and faster runner production.

CO₂ injection is not required, making it an excellent candidate for low-tech aquariums. It absorbs dissolved nutrients efficiently directly from the water column and substrate.

🪴 Planting & Maintenance

Plant individual crowns into the substrate, taking care to keep the crown (where the leaves meet the roots) just above the soil level to prevent rotting. Avoid trimming the tips of the leaves if possible, as cut leaves may yellow and decay; instead, prune older outer leaves at the base or trim runners to control spread.

Because it is a heavy root feeder, adding root fertilizers into the substrate encourages thick blade growth and rapid runner formation.
