Vallisneria spiralis 'Leopard', commonly known as Leopard Vallisneria, is a distinctive background rosette plant prized for its long, ribbon-like leaves covered in dark leopard-like spots and vertical reddish-brown striations. Extremely hardy and easy to care for, it provides excellent natural height and dynamic movement to planted aquariums.

🌱 Growth & Appearance

This variety forms tall, straight, strap-like leaves that grow upwards from a central crown base. Under good lighting, the translucent green blades develop prominent dark reddish-brown spots and tiger-stripe patterning across the entire leaf blade.

It grows steadily and propagates readily via subterranean runners. As the leaves reach the water surface, they naturally arch over to form a lush floating canopy, providing soft shading and natural cover throughout the aquarium.

💡 Lighting & CO₂

Vallisneria 'Leopard' is highly adaptable and thrives in low to high-tech environments. Moderate to strong lighting is recommended to bring out the deepest leopard spots and strongest reddish pigments along the foliage.

CO₂ injection is optional, making it ideal for low-tech setups. However, as a heavy root feeder, it benefits greatly from a nutrient-rich substrate or regular root tab fertilization containing iron and essential macronutrients.

🪴 Planting & Maintenance

Plant individual rosettes directly into the substrate, taking care to keep the crown (the point where leaves meet the roots) slightly above the soil line to prevent rot. Avoid using liquid carbon additives (gluteraldehyde), as Vallisneria species can be sensitive to them.

Maintenance is simple: remove older outer leaves near the base to keep the crown clean, or gently trim runners if the plant spreads into unwanted areas of the aquascape.
